Explore worlds
Kinds of worldNo levels, and creatures that never attack: roam, discover and craft at your own pace.
What makes an Explore world
Pick Explore on the New World screen for a world made for roaming:
- No levels and no XP. Tatazo's strength comes from the gear he wears: his gear strength is the average level of his gear slots, and an empty slot counts as 1. Better gear, found or crafted, makes him stronger.
- Nothing waits on a level. The Class Shrine works from the first day, changing class is free (each class's first weapon comes only once), every ability of your class is known, and the satchel is full size from the start.
- Creatures never attack. You can still cleanse them for their loot, and animals run from whoever hits them. The host can make bosses and mini-bosses fight back with the "Bosses fight back" switch.
- Hazards (running out of air, lava crusts) are on at first. The host can turn them off.
- Being knocked out costs nothing.
- A world made as another kind can't be turned into an Explore world.
Crafting what others find
In other worlds, the gear between the crafted and the master pieces only drops from creatures, and named pieces only come from bosses. In an Explore world you can craft them:
- Dropped gear is made from the materials of the realm that matches its level. Each item's page shows its recipe under "Crafted in Explore worlds".
- Named pieces need their realm's materials and that realm's token. Legendary ones also need two of the realm's master essence.
Realm tokens
Each realm hides a token at one of its landmarks. Each gator can take one there each game day. Tokens turn up in every kind of world, but only Explore worlds craft with them.
| Token | Realm | Where it lies |
|---|---|---|
| Riverlands Token | Riverlands | Goliath's lagoon in the Riverlands |
| Autumn Woods Token | Autumn Woods | Thornwood the Elder's lair on the far side of the Autumn Woods |
| Glowcap Hollow Token | Glowcap Hollow | Queen Morel's lair on the far side of the Glowcap Hollow |
| Primeval Isle Token | Primeval Isle | Scarjaw the Tyrant's lair on the far side of the Primeval Isle |
| Sunscorch Desert Token | Sunscorch Desert | The Great Sun Guardian's lair on the far side of the Sunscorch Desert |
| Frostlands Token | Frostlands | Frostmaw the Rime Matriarch's lair on the far side of the Frostlands |
| Ember Wastes Token | Ember Wastes | Magmaw the Caldera King's lair on the far side of the Ember Wastes |
| Dragonfire Isle Token | Dragonfire Isle | The top of the Dragon Tower on the Dragonfire Isle |
| Zombie Land Token | Zombie Land | Mortimer the Grave King's lair on the far side of Zombie Land |
The Discovery journal
Your progress in an Explore world is the Discovery journal: the DISCOVERIES page of the character menu (Tab). It counts six things:
- the places: the named lands on the map, and the named camps, digs, lookouts and wells in them (walk into one to find it),
- the kinds of creatures you have met,
- the kinds of fish you have caught,
- the different things you have crafted,
- the storytellers' and notice boards' lessons,
- the fossils you have brushed free at dig sites (see Things to discover).
Each realm has a card with how many of its places and creatures you have found. The whole journal is the average of the six parts. The page also lists this week's field tasks.
In an Explore world the journal gives the looks that levels give elsewhere. At 25% you get the River Champion look, and at 60% the Legend of the River look. The journal is kept in every world, so you can see how much you've found anywhere.
Explore worlds are for people who'd rather wander than grind: a parent and child building a map together, or anyone who wants to see every land without the fights. The journal rewards finding things, and every find counts.
Achievements
- The level achievements can't be earned in an Explore world, since it has no levels.
- The cleansing and boss achievements count only when the host lets bosses fight back.
- The exploring achievements count in every world: Mapmaker (20 lands), Naturalist (50 kinds of creatures), Angler's Log (25 kinds of fish), Keen Explorer (25% of the journal) and A Token of the Land (any realm token).
