Sunscorch Desert

Levels 40–70

Long dunes under a hard sun, with oases in the hollows and old fossils in the sand.

What it is like

WhereA continent about 1.5 km across, across the sea; its middle is about 2.5 km from the village.
DangerCreature levels 40–70, climbing from the harbour side (the coast facing the village) to the far side. More at night, on glacier peaks and in volcano craters.
TownsSafe towns with stations and a trading post kept by Zahra the Fennec Fox
Looks likeRolling dunes of golden sand. In some places umbrella acacias with wide flat tops stand together with spiky Joshua trees and small mesquite trees hung with long seed pods, and silvery desert sage and prickly pear cacti grow under them. In other places the sand lies open for a long way, with only tall saguaro cacti, tufts of dune grass and now and then a huge bottle-shaped baobab. Red sandstone rocks in red, orange and buff stripes, bleached pebble fields and pale fossil rocks lie on the sand, and where the flowers are out, orange and yellow poppies and purple verbena bloom. Date palms with orange dates crowd round the blue oases. Now and then, far out on the flat sand, a tall striped wind-carved spire stands on its own: you can see it from far away. Fell acacias for logs, sticks and sometimes thorns, date palms for logs and big leaves, mesquites for sticks and resin, Joshua trees for fibre and baobabs for a big load of logs. Press E at a date palm for dates, and at a saguaro or a prickly pear for cactus fruit. Cut sage for fibre and sometimes a blossom, dune grass for fibre, and pick desert flowers for blossoms. Break red sandstone with a pickaxe for sandstone, and pebble fields for pebbles and stone.
WeatherHeat haze and sandstorms under a warm light.
MusicAn oud-like tune over goblet drums, a dry wind and a far-off cicada.
Region namesSunscorch Dunes, Dustwind Sands, Mirage Flats, Bonewhite Wastes…

Watch out

  • Cacti have spines: an axe is best. Bare hands work, carefully, at half the speed.
  • A Sand Wyrm swims under the dunes: watch for the moving hump of sand, then step out of the ring.
  • Sand Scarabs come in swarms.
  • The Sun Guardian guards the old ruins.
  • The Great Sun Guardian sleeps under the dunes on the far side of the desert.

Tips

  • Sunstone veins need a copper pickaxe or better, like iron.
  • The wind-carved spires can't be broken: they stand far out on the dunes as a landmark to find your way by.
  • Sand scales from scorpions and wyrms make Dune Runner Sandals.
