Meet Your Raccoon Helper
More guidesA little raccoon that follows you everywhere, carries 50 slots of its own, and can break down, sell and tidy marked items on its own.
A little friend for a full satchel
Your satchel is stuffed, a fistful of common gear is weighing you down, and the walk to a shopkeeper feels a mile long. Then a small grey shape trots up beside you, chirrs happily, and hops onto the spare stone by your boots. That's your raccoon helper — small, quick and always close, and it's about to make your bags a lot less of a chore.
What it is
The raccoon helper is a little companion that follows you wherever you go. It never fights and it can't be hurt: it's a helper, not a fighter. It carries a bag of its own — 50 slots — on top of your satchel, so you choose what stays on you and what rides with your raccoon.
How it works
- Press Y, or the RACCOON button on the map screen, to open your raccoon's bag beside your own satchel.
- Drag items either way between the two. Nothing is sorted for you automatically unless you turn that job on (see below) — you decide what lives where.
- In Settings → Game, switch on whichever of its three jobs you want, and mark the items each one should act on: right-click any item — in your satchel, the loot feed or on the ground — for "Break down for you (raccoon)" or "Sell as junk (raccoon)".
What it can do for you
- Break down marked items. The moment you pick up something you've marked, your raccoon deals with it right then, before it even reaches your satchel:
- Gear breaks into crafting materials, using the same rules as the salvage station — the same share of its recipe's inputs, never more than the piece is worth.
- Anything else you've marked simply vanishes. There's nothing to take apart, so it's gone for good — mark only what you're sure you never want.
- Sell junk to a shopkeeper. While you're near a town's shopkeeper, your raccoon sells every marked stack — in your satchel or its own bag — for that shop's own price, straight into its own daily budget. It never sells for less than you would get selling by hand, and it never sells anything the shop wouldn't buy anyway.
- Stack and tidy. Every few seconds, it merges split stacks and sorts both bags on its own, so you're never hunting for one loose stick among fifty slots.
Each job has its own switch, so turn off whichever one you don't want; the marked lists stay saved even while a job is off.
Mark the common gear you always break down for materials — worn boots, spare axes, anything you'd salvage by hand anyway — before you head out. Your raccoon takes care of it the instant you loot it, so your satchel never fills with things you were only ever going to take apart.
Never pick up, and the raccoon
If you've marked an item "Never pick up" (see Storage: satchel, chests, the locker and the vault), your raccoon never sees it either — it stays exactly where it fell. The two lists work side by side without stepping on each other: what you never want to touch again stays untouched; what you want handled automatically gets handled the moment it would otherwise reach you.
Its bag is safe
Your raccoon's bag saves with your character, right alongside your satchel — and unlike your worn gear, nothing about a defeat ever touches it. Whatever you've put there stays there.
Getting one
The raccoon helper is sold in the store for US$19.99 (Steam shows the price in your own currency). It's a one-time purchase, kept for good, and it can't be traded or turned into coins. Real-money purchases are off until a grown-up turns them on with the PIN, and every purchase asks for the PIN. See Family safety features.
Where next
Once your bags stop overflowing, the rest of the world opens up: fewer trips home, more time exploring.
- Storage: satchel, chests, the locker and the vault: your satchel, chests, the Home Vault and "never pick up".
- The Travelling Pedlar: another convenience that saves you the walk to town.
- The market and trading: coins, the market board and the shops your raccoon sells to.
- Crafting: discover recipes and make anything: what the materials your raccoon breaks down for you are good for.
