The market and trading

Life in the valley

Orange coins, the market board, trading face to face, gifts, and staying fair.

Orange coins

Orange coins are the valley's money. You get them by playing: creatures carry a few, the notice board's jobs pay some, and you can sell things. Coins are never sold for real money. See Orange coins: earning and spending for the full list of what coins buy, from wardrobe skins to a Change of Heart.

Shopkeepers

The village's shopkeepers sell basic goods for about twice what they are worth and buy things back for about half, a little every day. They never buy or sell rare, epic or legendary things: those only come from playing and trading. See Villagers for who sells what.

The market board

Every world has a market board in the village. It's how players buy and sell with posted prices:

  • Listing: put a stack from your satchel up for sale at a price per item, for 1, 3 or 7 days. Listing costs 2% of the asking total (at least 1 coin).
  • Selling: when someone buys, you are paid even if you are not playing. A 3% fee comes off what you earn.
  • Buying: browse by category, sort and filter, and buy all or part of a listing.
  • Mailbox: anything that can't reach you (a full satchel, a listing that ran out) waits in your mailbox at the board. Nothing is ever lost.
  • Fair prices: once an item has sold a few times, prices must stay between a fifth and ten times its usual price that week. That stops typing mistakes and tricks.
  • The market keeper buys surplus straight away at a quarter of an item's worth, up to a daily limit. In a solo world the keeper is the only buyer.
  • You can have up to 30 listings at once.

The River Fund and great works

The market's fees don't vanish: they fill the world's River Fund. At each mark the whole village gains something everyone can see: lantern garlands over the well, flower boxes, festival bunting, a golden heron weathervane, and at the very top, evening fireworks. The board shows how close the next one is.

Trading face to face

Stand near another player and send a trade request. In the trade window:

  1. Each of you drags items from your satchel into your offer.
  2. You can add some coins to sweeten a swap (up to half the listed value of the items you offer; buying for coins alone belongs on the market board).
  3. Both press Ready. If anything changes, both Ready marks clear, so nobody gets surprised.
  4. Both press Confirm. Everything moves at the same moment, or nothing moves.

If one side is worth more than three times the other, the game shows a fairness hint. Walking away, a disconnect or a cancel closes the trade with nothing moved.

Gifts

On another player's card, Send a gift puts a stack straight into their satchel. Gifts follow the same rules as trades.

Things you can't trade

Some things are bound: class gear from level 8 binds to you the first time you wear it, and keepsakes from storylines are yours for good. Their pages say so.

Staying safe and fair

  • Every trade goes into both players' trade history (Players screen, My trades), with a Report button beside each one: unfair, a trick, unkind, or something else.
  • On a child's profile, a grown-up decides whether trading is off, board-only, or allowed with approved friends, and can set a daily limit. See Family safety features.
  • Never trade anything for real money or outside the game. If someone asks, report it.
