Orange coins: earning and spending
More guidesWhere the valley's coins come from, and the good things worth spending them on.
The pouch that never runs dry
Every cleanse leaves a few coins behind. Every notice-board job pays out. Sell a stack you don't need, and the pouch grows a little more — right up to the day you're a few coins short at the wardrobe, the shrine, or the ferry, and you have to decide what matters most. Orange coins are the valley's own money, earned only by playing, and they keep everything from the market board to a class look moving between players.
Where coins come from
- Cleansing creatures. A cleansed creature drops a few coins on the spot. Tougher, higher-level creatures carry more, and the amount always varies a little, so no two cleanses pay exactly the same.
- Notice-board jobs. Bring or deed rewards are shared among everyone who helped, so a job with friends fills every pouch at once.
- Discoveries and quests. Finding a landmark, finishing a storyline, and other one-time discoveries pay coins too.
- Selling things. Shopkeepers, town stalls and the market keeper buy back goods for about half their worth, on the spot, any time. The market board pays full asking price, but only once someone buys your listing. See The market and trading for how each one works.
Coins are never sold for real money, and nothing bought for real money turns into coins.
Where coins go
| Spend it on | What it costs |
|---|---|
| Listing on the market board | 2% of the asking total, at least 1 coin |
| Selling on the market board | 3% taken from what you earn |
| A class look at the wardrobe | A ladder from a few hundred coins for the first, up to several thousand for the last |
| A Change of Heart at the shrine | Grows with level — 1,920 coins at level 30 |
| A ferry crossing | A handful of coins, more for a longer crossing (see Getting around, and animal friends) |
The market's fees don't vanish into thin air: they fill the world's River Fund, which decorates the village as it grows. A Change of Heart's coins and a wardrobe skin's coins leave the world for good, the same way a cleansed creature's loot never comes back. Every coin sink keeps the valley's money worth something.
What you can do about it
- Hunt where it pays. Tougher creatures and elites carry more coins than a pair of easy ones, so a party pushing into harder ground earns faster than one staying safe near the village.
- Choose how you sell. A shopkeeper or the market keeper pays on the spot but less; the market board pays more but takes a small fee and a buyer's patience. Pick whichever you need more: coins now, or coins later.
- Work the notice board together. A job's reward is a shared pool, so bringing friends doesn't shrink anyone's share — it grows the job everyone can tackle.
- Save for the big spends. A Change of Heart or a top class look costs more the higher your level climbs, so it helps to know the price before you're standing at the shrine deciding.
A ferry's fare grows with the distance it crosses, so a trip to a far-off land costs more than one next door. If your pouch is thin, you can always swim or paddle a canoe across for free — it just takes longer.
