Storage: satchel, chests, the locker and the vault

More guides

Growing your satchel, the chest ladder up to the Home Vault, the town locker, and opening your vault from afar.

The satchel

You start with a 1–8 bar and a satchel, and it grows as you level up. Craftable bags add more for good: the Leather Satchel, the Wolf-Pelt Pack and the Dragonhide Pack, each worn once.

Chests, and the chest ladder

A Chest (18 stacks) and a Big Chest (32 stacks) are your first storage, made at the workbench. From there, an Upgrade Kit used on a chest swaps it in place for the next rung, keeping every stack:

Each kit is crafted at the anvil from materials of farther continents: iron and moonstone for the Trunk, gold and obsidian (with a dragon scale) for the Coffer, and rarer dragon and gold materials for the Vault kit. Use the kit on the piece it fits and it becomes the next rung on the spot: paint, position and every item inside stay exactly as they were.

You can tell the rungs apart at a glance. The Iron-Bound Trunk is a dark wooden trunk with a rounded lid, wrapped in riveted iron bands. The Realm Coffer is rich red wood on gold feet, with gold trim, gold corner caps and set gems. The Home Vault is a small sandstone strongroom on a stone base, with gold-capped corner pillars, a round gold vault door on heavy hinges, a spoked handle wheel and a turquoise gem above the door.

The town locker

Any town's keeper opens the same personal locker as any other: "My locker" in their conversation. It starts at 30 slots, and coin upgrades add 10 more each, starting at 500 coins and doubling from there, up to 6 upgrades — a coin sink, never sold for real money. It's yours alone, and saves with your character.

If your Home Vault ever empties out (see below), whatever doesn't fit the locker lands in its claim box: take from it any time, but nothing can be put into it directly.

The Home Vault

Your home chest ladder ends in the Home Vault: only on your own land (inside your Home Totem's claim), one to a player, and only you can open it — not friends, not your party. It has two stores:

  • Materials: any non-food Material-kind item (wood, ingots, moonstone and the rest) is kept as a plain count, with no limit. Deposit a satchel stack, or "Deposit all materials" at once; take out however much you need.
  • Gear cabinet: 200 paged slots, searched and sorted, each holding a whole item exactly as it was (durability, binding and all).

Crafting near your vault can draw on its materials, the same as a nearby chest. Food kept in the cabinet spoils like it would in any chest — only an Icebox stops that clock.

Nothing is ever lost. Take the vault down and it asks first, then empties straight into your town locker. If your land goes 30 days unvisited and rests, the vault does the same automatically: its contents move to your locker (overflowing into the claim box if they don't fit) before anyone else could reach them.

Opening it from afar

Craft the rare Vault Whistle from top-tier materials and blow it once: it binds to you for good, and afterwards N (or the VAULT button on the map screen) opens your Home Vault from wherever you are in the world — never while a creature is fighting you or you were just hurt. In Survival worlds it only works if the host has turned that on for the world, and only with the whistle.

The store also sells a Vault Key for those who'd rather not craft: a one-time purchase, kept for good, that opens exactly the same remote access. It's entirely optional — the Vault Whistle above earns the same thing for free — and, like the whistle, it never works during a fight. Unlike the whistle, the Vault Key never works in Survival worlds, even on ones that allow the whistle.

Never pick up an item

Hunting something for its rare drop, but sick of an item you never use crowding your satchel? Right-click it — in your satchel, in the pickup feed, or on the ground where it just fell — and choose Never pick up. It still drops for everyone else and still shows on the ground, dimmed for you alone, but it never comes to your satchel again: not by walking over it, not by a magnet pet, not by Pico fetching it. A party friend who hasn't marked it can still take it, and it despawns after the normal time either way.

  • Undo it any time: right-click the same item again for Pick up again, or open Settings → Game → Never pick up → Manage to remove one item, Clear all, or flip the switch to pause the whole list without losing it. It's saved with your character, in every mode.
