Item powers: gear with a will of its own

More guides

Named gear with powers of its own, and the Glowstone Font that gives a plain piece one.

A ring that never lets your mana run dry

Some gear does more than sit in a slot. A ring that fills your mana back up while you stand and talk. Boots that make you just a little faster than everyone running beside you. A blade that drinks back a sip of the damage it deals as your own health. These are item powers, and the best of them are waiting on named gear out in the realms — or built onto a piece you already own, drop by drop, at the Glowstone Font.

What a power is

A power is a small, honest edge: nothing that decides a fight on its own, but something you feel every minute you wear it. Every worn piece adds up, with caps so no build ever breaks the numbers:

PowerWhat it doesCap on what you wear
SpeedMoves you faster (mostly boots)35%
Regen (health, mana)A little back every second, while fedno cap
Leech (health, mana)Draws back a share of the damage you deal15% each
On cleanse (health, mana)A burst back each time a creature you fought is cleansedno cap
Critical hitA better chance of a critical hit25%
Skill (melee, distance, magic, shielding, fishing)Extra skill levels from gear aloneno cap
BreathLonger under water40 seconds

A piece's tooltip always spells its powers out in plain words, so you never have to guess what you're wearing.

Named gear: a story and a power to match

Rare, epic and legendary named pieces carry a power that fits who or what made them. A few you might meet:

PieceCarries
RiverheartDraws life back with every hit
SunbladeA gentler pull of the same kind
Titan's TearHealth and mana, both, back every second
Moonshadow BladesQuicker feet and a taste of life back
Wellspring SceptreMana back every second, and a pull of more from every hit
Goliath's CrusherA burst of health whenever a creature you fought is cleansed
Crown of the CanopyHealth and mana, both, trickling back while you're fed

Elites, mini-bosses and bosses across every realm carry their own crafted pieces too — Frostwalker Boots from wolf pelts and frost crystals, a Sunstone Band from the desert, Raptor-Feather Boots on the Primeval Isle, and simpler, cheaper ones near the village: Leafstep Sandals from your first scraps of leaf and fibre, a Swiftwind Band from copper and feathers. Read how each piece is made on its own page.

The Glowstone Font: give a piece its own power

Beside the workshop, a basin of glowing water lets you imbue one power into a piece of gear you already own, using a realm's own essence:

EssenceAddsOnly fits
Frost Crystal+0.8 mana a second (while fed)any piece
Sunstone+0.8 health a second (while fed)any piece
Ember CoreDraws 1.5% of the damage you deal as healthany piece
Moth Wing DustDraws 1.5% of the damage you deal as manaany piece
Obsidian+1.5% critical hit chanceany piece
Raptor Feather+2% movement speedboots
Amber+6 health each time a creature you fought is cleansedany piece
Glow Spores+5 mana each time a creature you fought is cleansedany piece
Wolf Pelt+1 melee skillany piece
Antler+1 distance skillany piece
Pearl+1 magic levelany piece
Scarab Shell+1 shielding skillarmour and shields
Coral+4 seconds of air under waterheadgear

Bring the essence and a few orange coins (a piece's level sets the price) and the font adds one step to that one piece. Every piece can take up to 3 imbues, so you can layer the same power three times over, or spread three different ones across a piece.

What you can do about it

  • Start cheap and close to home. The first speed boots and rings are made from common materials near the village — no need to wait for a rare drop to feel faster on your feet.
  • Let the font finish a piece you love. Found gear you like the look of but wish did a little more? Bring an essence from the realm it's themed after and give it a power of your own choosing.
  • Save your best essences for your best piece. An imbue is permanent on that piece, so it's worth thinking about which one deserves it before you spend a rare essence.
  • Watch for the announced finds. A named piece with a strong power is always shouted to everyone nearby when it drops — see Lucky drops and rarity for the odds.
Imbue the piece you'll keep

Class gear binds to you the first time you wear it, and an imbue stays on its piece for good. So give your first essence to the piece you'll wear longest, like a good pair of boots, and it pays you back every day you wear it.

Where next

Powers are one more reason a piece is worth chasing: read The gear ladder for how gear climbs in tiers, and Lucky drops and rarity for the odds of a named or master find. A piece you can't use isn't wasted — Salvage: take old gear apart breaks it down, and The market and trading gets it into hands that can use it. Building your own from scratch starts at Crafting: discover recipes and make anything.
