Controls, hotbar and tool wheel

More guides

Keep your hands ready: skills, supplies, tools and your weapon all have a clear place.

Ready for the next good idea

One moment you are eating a mango beside the river. The next, a rare ore vein shines on the hill. The hotbar and tool wheel let Tatazo change jobs quickly, so the adventure keeps moving.

What goes in your hands

The hotbar has 8 slots for your skills and quick supplies. Put a skill from the Skill Book there, or drag food and potions from the satchel there. Choose a hotbar slot to cast its skill, or take out its food or potion; choose that supply again to use it.

Tools, weapons and building pieces do not go on the hotbar. The game moves them safely into your satchel if they land there.

Your Hand gear slot decides which weapon Tatazo fights with. A weapon sitting in the satchel is safe to carry, but it does not fight for you.

The tool wheel

Use H to open the tool wheel. It shows the best tool you carry of each kind, plus your weapon at the top. Pick a tool and Tatazo keeps it out until you choose something else or start an attack.

With a controller, hold the shoulder control for the tool wheel, point with a stick, then let go to choose. A quick press still steps through the hotbar instead.

You can change the tool-wheel action and other controls in Settings → Controls. The game shows the right prompt for the device you are using.

Put food and healing potions on the hotbar before you leave town. Keep your tools in the satchel. Then a new fishing spot or a hungry friend never means a long inventory search.

Where next

Choose a class and fill the hotbar with its skills in Picking your class. Learn why the weapon in your Hand slot matters in Combat and elements, then use your tools to make a home in Building and waterworks.
