Lookouts and the telescope
More guidesClimb a lookout tower's ladder with one press, then look through its brass telescope to spot far towns, temples and landmarks and mark them on your map.
See the whole land from above
A wooden lookout tower stands in the countryside of nearly every land. There is a ladder up its front, a deck with railings, and at the back a brass telescope on a tripod. Now you can use all of it.
The ladder
Aim at the ladder and press E to climb. Tatazo walks to the foot and climbs the rungs by himself, smoothly, and steps onto the deck. No jumping needed and nothing to miss. Up on the deck, aim at the top of the ladder and press E to climb back down. Press Space (jump) at any moment to let go and drop.
Reaching the deck still counts as climbing the lookout: you learn the view's fact and a place or two you haven't found yet.
The telescope
On the deck, aim at the telescope and press E to look through it. The view zooms into a round lens with a dark rim.
- Look around: drag with the mouse, use the arrow keys, or push the sticks on a controller.
- Zoom: three steps, about ×3, ×6 and ×11. Use the mouse wheel, Q and E, or the shoulder buttons on a controller.
- Leave: Esc or the back button. You can also just walk away.
A small ring in the middle of the lens shows what the telescope is resting on. If it's a far town or landmark (a temple, ruins, a stone gate, a grotto or another lookout) you'll see its name and how far away it is. Hold it steady for 2 seconds and the ring fills: you've spotted it. It's marked on your map and minimap with a pale icon, and you earn a little experience.
How far, and what counts
- The telescope sees up to about 1,100 metres. Anything nearer is already in plain view.
- A hill in the way hides what's behind it, so pick a clear line. Thick forest can fill the lens with leaves, so the lookouts in open country give the best views.
- A spotted place is a mark, not a visit. It doesn't unlock fast travel: go there yourself to discover it properly.
Zoom out to the first step, sweep round the whole horizon, and watch for the ring's name tag. Then zoom in on what you spotted to hold it steady. Each lookout is a good spot to plan your next trip.
Where next
Open your map and see what you marked, then pick one and set off. Temples have a secret to open: The temple's Glyph Door. More ways to find places are in Things to discover and Map, minimap, pins and fast travel.
