Saves, profiles and autosave

More guides

How worlds, characters and settings are kept safe, and the calm way to leave a session.

You close the game after a good evening, then come back to the same little house, the same gator and the same work waiting by the river. Saves hold on to the story you made.

Your profile and characters

Your profile belongs to this device account. It keeps your settings, family choices and the characters you have made. Choose a character in the lobby before entering a world. Each character has its own name, look and world progress.

Switching characters saves the current character first. You can keep different characters for different classes or adventures. A character removed from the list is kept in the deleted list so it can be restored while there is room.

What a world keeps

Every world keeps its own name, seed, rules, last played time and the progress of its world systems. That includes the changes that make the world yours. A character's progress in one world stays separate from their progress in another.

Apocalypse runs are different. They are a quick challenge and do not make a world save.

Autosave and backups

The game saves a live world by itself at calm water and before too long has passed. It also saves when the world closes. Background saves write safely, so play does not have to stop for the disk.

Before a newer world save replaces an older one, the game keeps backups. The worlds screen can show those backups and restore one. Restoring first protects the current state with a backup of its own.

What you can do

  • Let the save finish naturally before quitting a world.
  • Use the worlds screen to choose the world you mean to enter.
  • Choose the right character in the lobby before you press play.
  • Use a backup from the worlds screen when a world save cannot be read or you truly need to return to an earlier state.
  • Keep a clear name on each world so a family can tell their shared places apart.
Leave at a natural stopping point

Finish the build, get somewhere safe, and leave through the game's own menu. Autosave is there to help, but a calm ending makes it easy to remember what you wanted to do next.

Where next

Open the lobby and look at your characters and worlds. Then read Game modes: pick your kind of world for separate kinds of worlds, Hosting, visitors and password worlds for a shared world, and Family safety features for settings a grown-up may manage.
